Dymphna Lonergan

Artist Statement

I have always loved to paint and draw. I can remember as a very young child finding a huge rainbow and coloured pencils hidden just before Christmas, immediately I started to plan what I would create with them. I feel compelled to create images and when I neglect this urge in me I am worse for it. My work is mostly landscapes, seascapes and abstracts. I experience an emotional connection to everything I paint, and therefore sometimes find commissions difficult to negotiate. I tend to emphasise aspects of an image that appeal to me most, so my work is never an exact recreation of a view or a photograph. One of the best things about being an artist is being able to share how I see the world, or how I would like it to be. Once the painting is out there it is up to the observer to develop their relationship with it. It is a privilege to be able to share my work with others, possibly my favourite part of the process is when I know someone has a piece of my work in their home and they love it.
